Abstract:
The article analyzes the problem of applying the so-called “unilateral sanctions” in interstate relations. It is noted that in practice unilateral economic measures are often political rather than legal in nature. The issue of the possibility of identifying these measures with international sanctions and retaliatory measures is being raised. The official UN position on international sanctions and retaliatory measures is being considered. Russian legislation provides for the possibility of applying unilateral economic measures; however, these measures are not identified with the term “sanctions”. The terminological confusion of these terms allows states to introduce unilateral measures unreasonably and equate them to sanctions.
