Abstract: The article deals with the issues of building effective leadership systems in international companies. Based on the analysis of modern leadership research, it is shown that the creation of more flexible, combined management models related to horizontal leadership and the development of a «leadership network» reflect a paradigm shift in management and leadership in international companies. Such changes require elaboration of new business and operational models, as well as a new type of leadership. Disclosure of leadership mechanisms lies in the field of innovation research, virtual distributed teams, community development. Thus, the analysis of the architecture of leadership and cognitive structures of corporations is a promising area. The article shows that the reasons for the success of international companies from among «new players» lie in the architecture of leadership and mental models built on divergent thinking, dialogue and experimentation.
