Abstract:
To address what Stern (2016) has described as 'the twin defining challenges of our century' -- poverty alleviation and climate change -- this paper draws attention to a somewhat under-appreciated, but profoundly important commonality in these dual objectives: both require societies to navigate and manage system-wide transformative change. Aiming to focus research efforts towards the most promising pathways forward, we review the comparative strengths and weaknesses of existing tools for analysing transformational change processes and highlight key commonalities and opportunities for collaboration across climate and development research domains.
