Levels of Residential Satisfaction with Housing Location in Neighbourhoods South of Johannesburg Central Business District

Abstract: This study reports the results of a survey on current levels of satisfaction with housing location and also with desired housing location. The survey was conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over 320 in-person interviews were performed by students at Wits University on African respondents in Soweto and nearby areas. The survey examines the satisfaction levels with current housing location characteristics for things of daily importance to the household, i.e. food shopping, schools, transportation versus ideal housing location in regards to the same items. Despite the perceived issues with the location of these residential areas in the Johannesburg property market, the most important aspect residents are satisfied with was the transportation and location to work place followed closely by safety. Regarding the worse thing about their current location the highest percentage was regarding crime. Regression models will be used to study the reasons given for moving with regards to the satisfaction levels and the identified best and worse regarding their current housing and also to their ideal housing situation.
