Abstract: In all high industrialized nations there are ongoing debates about the future of work, the welfare state, value-change and the economic situation. The arguments are quite similar. Dominant key words in these discussions are globalization, moral of work, international competitiveness, absenteeism, days of illness and questions concerning costs. The welfare state of the past and the present is under disposal. Dismantling or modification are the controversial positions. Until now all or even most of the debates are based on data which are poor, heterogenous, isolated and used selectively. In our analysis we present and discuss a broad empirical based comparison of the development of attitudes towards work. Furthermore stress and absenteeism will be taken into the focus. The period of time of our study covers the last 20 years. The nations included are the Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and the USA.
