Abstract:
Class attendance is one of the requirements that students studying at higher education institutions have to meet. That being said, university professors use different tracking methods for students’ class attendance. When having small groups of up to 30 students, tracking class attendance is an easy task; however, when having large groups of several dozens or even hundreds of students, fast, efficient, cheap and obstruction-free tracking of students’ class participation is challenging. Tracking is to check if students have attended their classes and help professor organize classes and optimize time needed for class attendance tracking. This problem was analyzed on the example of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek and possible solution was suggested. In order to deal with this issue, legal requirements laid down by Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek had to be taken into account accompanied by proposing possible technical solutions. Since one of the possible solutions for tracking students' class participation was the one based on using disposable codes, we decided to study their options. Each student is given a disposable code to check in the classroom. Using the code and a web application, students’ attendance is tracked. A class attendance tracking model is built on the idea. The model was used to develop a programming system which is being tested for the last two years. Since no serious problems have been recorded in the experimental period, we can draw a conclusion that such students’ class attendance tracking system is valid for future usages.
