Abstract: This paper examines the performance of Targeted Public Distribution System in the four Southern States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in terms of off take of food grains, coverage and targeting. The relevance of PDS in South Indian States is lost among the poor and the vulnerable sections of the society due to the coverage of ineligible households and the decline of off take of food grains from FCI. By flouting the central norms with regard to identifying the eligible households and size of entitlement, the States crippled the PDS except in Kerala. Following the implementation of NFSA the PDS is improving in Karnataka in a big way
