Outlook Report N. 3/2020 - The Agro-food in Apulia

Giuseppe Creanza and Maria Jennifer Grisorio ()

No 3, Outloook Reports from Regional Agency for Technology and Innovation (Apulia, Italy)

Abstract: The report describes the basic features, sectors and economic performance of Apulia's agro-food industry, in a comparison with macro-regional and national dynamics. The supply chain is an important sector for the region: it expresses a quarter of the turnover of the entire manufacturing sector, and shows a good openness to international markets, even if concentrated in certain production sectors (fruit, vegetables, bakery and flour products, wines). Although it is mainly made up of small enterprises, it also includes a fair number of large companies. Apulian agri-food production is of a good quality standard. The regional organic sector is very important, accounting for 13.5% of the national organic sector. There is no absence of criticalities, linked above all to the structure of the supply chain itself, which makes it less competitive on global markets, to the lack of integration between agricultural production and industrial processing, and to a still insufficient contribution of process and organisational innovations, such as to take it to the technological frontier. The report concludes with an examination of some of the supply chain's development scenarios and some of the challenges it is already facing today: from changing consumer food behaviour to safety standards and the environmental and climate sustainability of production.
