Abstract:
Short-circuit faults represent one of the most severe and frequently occurring types of disturbances that jeopardize the safe, reliable, and stable operation of power systems. The ability to perform precise short-circuit calculations and to conduct thorough mechanistic analyses is critical for multiple aspects of power system management, including the selection and rating of electrical equipment, the accurate setting and coordination of relay protection devices, and the comprehensive evaluation of overall system stability under fault conditions. In this study, the power system simulation software DIgSILENT is adopted as a research and analysis platform to systematically demonstrate the entire process of modeling, simulation, and mechanistic examination of short-circuit faults within a power network. The methodology includes detailed construction of system models, implementation of fault scenarios, and step-by-step tracking of transient electromagnetic responses throughout the network. The simulation outcomes indicate that DIgSILENT is capable of accurately reproducing the dynamic behavior of currents and voltages during short-circuit events, capturing both the rapid transient phenomena and the subsequent system stabilization processes. These results not only verify the reliability and precision of the simulation platform but also highlight its practical significance for fault diagnosis, protective device coordination, and the development of strategies to mitigate the impact of short-circuit disturbances on power system operation. By providing a comprehensive framework for both theoretical analysis and practical application, this work underscores the essential role of advanced simulation tools in enhancing the resilience and operational safety of modern power systems.
