Pandemic readiness in the US financial services sector: When failure is not an option

Abstract: This paper provides an update to ‘Pandemic flu planning in the US financial services sector’, a paper published in Volume 1, Number 3, of Journal of Business Continuity and Emergency Planning. In the present paper, the author examines the state of pandemic readiness one year later, referencing four new publications available for planning in the USA. The paper focuses on key observations and lessons learned from the US Department of Treasury’s autumn 2007 exercise, which was conducted among 2,775 financial services institutions. The paper then briefly discusses the pandemic guidance issued by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council in December 2007.
