Improving access to goods and services in commercial property

Abstract: In this paper, the background to disability discrimination legislation is explored. Definitions, categories and numbers of currently disabled persons are established. The specific disability discrimination acts, in particular the terms of DDA 1995, are outlined, and the importance of compliance with these statutes is established. Understanding of the term ‘reasonable’ as applied to access adjustments is evaluated, and there is stress on the need to undertake an access audit of all buildings from where goods and services are offered. The value of current guidance documents is stated, and access strategy planning is discussed, in terms of establishing reasonable action. The nature of possible adjustments is discussed. The impact of disability legislation upon the building surveying industry is established.
