Abstract:
This paper first assesses the structure of the mobile money sector, mobile money use cases and the associated usage trends in Lesotho. Second, it highlights the regulation of mobile money. Third, it discusses the challenges constraining adoption and usage of mobile money services and provides key policy and/or regulatory initiatives undertaken by all stakeholders in the ecosystem to break up the uptake and usage barriers. Finally, it concludes that mobile money has a potential to improve financial inclusion in Lesotho and therefore, provides policy recommendations, which the service providers and other stakeholders should exploit to further increase access and usage of mobile money services with a view to increase financial inclusion in Lesotho.
