Abstract: The article evidences the extent to which the personalities of Oltenia contributed to the modernization of this region, in the time interval between 1821 and 1914. Oltenia represented the first line in the modernization of Wallachia, then Romania, due both to its potential and the personalities that lived in this historical region of Romania.
