A method to compile tables for child mortality

Bojidar Russev

Economic Thought journal, 2010, issue 6, 51-71

Abstract: The theoretical opportunities are discussed in this study to draw up tables for mortality of children below the age of 1 year according to the available statistical information in Bulgaria. Two approaches are suggested: on a monthly basis and a combined one at different age intervals – days (0,1,2,...,8), seven days' intervals (9-15; 16-22; 23-29) and finally – by months (1,2,...,11). The methodological problems have been settled by means of combined application of age intervals of various range. The provided theoretical formulations and solutions are backed up in practice with the established tables for child mortality in Bulgaria for the year 2008.
