Abstract:
The literature that provides structural explanations for gender differences in behavior, and that contributes to understanding the lower delinquency rates attributed to women, spans several fields, including sociology, psychology, law, and economics. Although critical gaps remain in this area of knowledge, the internalization of gender roles as individual standards emerges as a common factor across the various explanations offered by the literature. This study examines whether the outbreak of COVID-19 altered the usual performance of delinquency risk in the payment of financial obligations by gender in Argentina. Drawing on unique registry data, the paper provides new empirical evidence on the structural nature of gender-based divergent behavior in the fulfillment of financial obligations.
