Abstract: Current trade disputes focus on import tariffs. However non-tariff barriers still constitute a large share of barriers to trade. Cross-country harmonisation of product standards reduces these barriers. The trade-enhancing effects of such harmonisation efforts are equivalent to a reduction in import tariffs of 1.8 percentage points, compared to an average applied tariff rate of 2.0% for the European Union.

Les conflits commerciaux actuels se focalisent sur les droits de douane à l’importation, mais les barrières non tarifaires représentent encore une part importante des obstacles au commerce. L’harmonisation entre pays des normes réglementant les produits réduirait ces obstacles et équivaudrait à une baisse de 1,8 pp des droits de douane à l’importation, par rapport à un taux moyen de 2,0 % appliqué par l’UE.
