School Type and Students’ Academic Performance in Social Studies in Junior Secondary Certificate Examination (JSCE)

Abstract: School type determines the level of performance in social studies by students at the junior secondary certificate examination (JSCE). This paper examined the difference in academic achievement of students in both private and public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. Research question was formulated to guide the study. The sample size was 940 respondents drawn from both private and public schools. Ex-post facto design was used for this study and t-test analysis was adopted to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that students in private secondary schools performed better in Social Studies than those in public schools. Based on the result, conclusions were drawn, recommendations made and suggestions for further research offered.
