Understanding the Linkages between Agri‐food Trade and SDGs: Literature and Research Gaps

Abstract: This article synthesises findings from the literature reviews of two EU funded projects, TRADE4SD and MATS, to explore the multidimensional linkages between agri‐food trade and sustainability, with a focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through structured literature reviews, we assess the economic, environmental and social sustainability implications of trade and trade policy, explore spillover effects and identify emerging pathways and solutions for making trade more sustainable from identifying literature gaps relevant for policymaking. Our analysis reveals a dominant focus on economic sustainability in current research, with limited attention to environmental and social dimensions while keeping agency and multi‐stakeholder perspectives neglected. We conclude by identifying methodological and thematic gaps and propose directions for more systems‐based research and policy action in the future accounting for coherence and trade‐offs to foster sustainable agri‐food trade. Cet article synthétise les résultats des analyses documentaires de deux projets financés par l'Union européenne, TRADE4SD et MATS, afin d'explorer les liens multidimensionnels entre le commerce agroalimentaire et le développement durable, en mettant l'accent sur les Objectifs de développement durable des Nations Unies. À travers des analyses documentaires structurées, nous évaluons les implications économiques, environnementales et sociales du commerce et des politiques commerciales en matière de développement durable, explorons les effets induits et identifions des pistes et solutions émergentes pour un commerce plus durable, en repérant les lacunes de la littérature pertinentes pour l'élaboration des politiques. Notre analyse révèle une prédominance de la durabilité économique dans la recherche actuelle, au détriment des dimensions environnementales et sociales, et une négligence des perspectives liées à l'action des acteurs et aux multiples parties prenantes. En conclusion, nous identifions les lacunes méthodologiques et thématiques et proposons des pistes pour une recherche et une action publique plus systémiques à l'avenir, prenant en compte la cohérence et les compromis nécessaires pour favoriser un commerce agroalimentaire durable. Dieser Artikel fasst die Ergebnisse der Literaturrecherchen zweier von der EU finanzierter Projekte, TRADE4SD und MATS, zusammen. Ziel ist es, die vielschichtigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen dem Handel mit Agrar‐ und Lebensmittelerzeugnissen und Nachhaltigkeit zu untersuchen, wobei der Fokus auf den Zielen der Vereinten Nationen für globale Nachhaltigkeitsziele liegt. Anhand strukturierter Literaturrecherchen bewerten wir die Folgen von Handel und Handelspolitik auf die wirtschaftliche, ökologische und soziale Nachhaltigkeit, untersuchen Spillover‐Effekte und identifizieren neue Wege und Lösungen für einen nachhaltigeren Handel. Darüber hinaus zeigen wir für die Politikgestaltung relevante Lücken in der Literatur auf. Unsere Analyse hat ergeben, dass der Schwerpunkt der aktuellen Forschung vorwiegend auf der wirtschaftlichen Nachhaltigkeit liegt, während ökologische und soziale Dimensionen nur begrenzt Beachtung finden und die Perspektiven von Beteiligten und verschiedenen Interessengruppen vernachlässigt werden. Abschließend identifizieren wir methodische und thematische Forschungslücken und zeigen Richtungen für eine stärker systemorientierte Forschung und politische Maßnahmen in der Zukunft auf. Hierbei berücksichtigen wir Kohärenz und Zielkonflikte, um einen nachhaltigen Agrar‐ und Lebensmittelhandel zu fördern.
