To cluster or not to cluster? Spatial determinants of closures in the American craft brewing industry

Abstract: As the American craft brewing industry matures, closures are becoming more prevalent. This paper studies the geographic patterns of and locational factors associated with craft brewery closures in three US cities with particular focus on the role of clustering on firm mortality. While the proximity of other breweries is not statistically significant in explaining brewery mortality, closures appear to occur outside of known clusters and in more residential areas outside of downtown districts. This study contributes to the literature on the relationship between clustering and firm failure rates as well as the debate regarding land use regulations surrounding craft breweries. A medida que la industria cervecera artesanal americana madura, los cierres son cada vez más frecuentes. Este trabajo estudia los patrones geográficos y los factores de ubicación asociados con los cierres de cervecerías artesanales en tres ciudades de EE.UU., con especial énfasis en el papel de la formación de conglomerados en la mortalidad de las empresas. Mientras que la proximidad de otras cervecerías no es estadísticamente significativa en cuanto a explicar la mortalidad de las cervecerías, los cierres parecen ocurrir fuera de los conglomerados conocidos y en áreas más residenciales fuera de los distritos más céntricos. Este estudio contribuye a la literatura sobre la relación entre los conglomerados y las tasas de fracaso de las empresas, así como al debate sobre la normativa de ordenación territorial en torno a las cervecerías artesanales. 米国のクラフトビール産業が成熟するにしたがって、醸造所の廃業が増えてきている。本稿では、企業の廃業率に対する集積の役割に特に注目して、米国の3つの都市におけるクラフトビール醸造所の廃業の地理的パターンと廃業に関連する立地的要因を検討する。他の醸造所との近接性は、醸造所の廃業率を説明するうえで統計的に有意ではないものの、廃業は既存の集積外で起きているようにみられ、さらには中心街地域の外側の居住地域における廃業がより多いと考えられる。本研究は、集積と企業の倒産との関連性に関する研究と、クラフトビール醸造業者を取り囲む土地利用規制に関する議論に寄与するものである。
