Abstract:
The warnings of declining education infrastructure offered by the National Commission on Excellence in Education in 1983 and the proposals for revitalizing education provided in national policy initiatives such as Goals 2000 provide powerful arguments for the systematic study of undergraduate retention and graduation. This article develops a system to monitor and facilitate institutional decisionmaking designed to improve student success and reduce attrition. The methodology may serve as a prototype to be adopted by colleges or universities across the country and help to inform national education planning and policymaking.
