Space and innovation: A sociological view from below

Abstract: This paper identifies three great domains of problems concerning the spatial dimension of social phenomena that are currently studied by sociology and other social sciences, and which are here identified as: (1) ‘Space–Place’, (2) ‘Space–Territory’ and (3) ‘Space–Representation’. The paper tries to demonstrate how the process of analysing these domains is sensitive to two different (and, up to a certain point, contrasting) modes of conceptualizing social reality. For this purpose, it follows the structure and content of a synoptic guide table devised to point out, in a systematic way, a series of theoretical hints and research pathways suggested by distinct modes of sociological problematization of the phenomena included in the above‐mentioned domains. En este artículo se identifican tres grandes ámbitos de los problemas relativos a la dimensión espacial de los fenómenos sociales que actualmente son estudiados por la sociología y otras ciencias sociales, y que aquí se identifican como: (1) ‘Espacio–Lugar’, (2) ‘Espacio–Territorio’ y (3) ‘Espacio–Representación’. El artículo trata de demostrar cómo el proceso de análisis de estos dominios es sensible a dos modos diferentes (y, hasta cierto punto, contrastantes) de conceptualizar la realidad social. Para ello, sigue la estructura y el contenido de un cuadro guía sinóptico ideado para indicar, de forma sistemática, una serie de pistas teóricas y vías de investigación sugeridas por distintas modalidades de problematización sociológica de los fenómenos incluidos en los ámbitos mencionados. 本稿では、社会学及びその他の社会科学分野で現在研究されている社会現象の空間的次元に関する問題の3つの大きな領域、すなわち、1)空間‐場所、2)空間‐領域、3)空間‐表現を特定する。これらの領域を分析するプロセスが、社会的現実を概念化する2つの異なる(ある時点までは対照的である)様式に対してどの程度感受性であるかを示すことを試みる。そのために、前述の領域に含まれる現象の社会学的問題化の様々な様式によって示唆された一連の理論的ヒントと研究経路を、体系的な方法で指摘するために考案された概要一覧表の構造と内容に従って検討する。
