Abstract: The transformation of China's planned economy since its opening in 1978 has led to considerable prosperity, comprehensive modernization, and a globally competitive, sometimes leading economy. With its accession to the WTO, China has continued to integrate into the global markets. Nevertheless, the Chinese economic order has not developed into a Western-style market economy but has established its own form beyond market and planned economy – Chinese state capitalism. The resulting different practices (e. g. state intervention, subsidies, technology transfer) can lead to distortions of competition in international markets. Due to China's economic weight, these distortions have become significant. The European Union can act at the level of trade, competition, and investment policy to counteract distortions and to improve global competition on a more level playing field.
