Abstract: Is the call for direct democracy populist or is it a response to the challenge of populism? To answer this question, this article distinguishes between two types of populism, namely „genuine“ and „nominal“ populists. While genuine populists want to improve the responsiveness of politicians to the wishes of the citizens and in particular of the petit bourgeoisie, nominal populists refer to an alleged homogeneous will of the people which, however, only serves to justify their own position. The demand for more direct democracy is compatible with genuine populism, but not with nominal populism. More difficult to reconcile with genuine populism is the criterion of citizen sovereignty of the constitutional political economy. The article nevertheless point out that mainstream parties can use direct-democratic elements to prevent the alienation of the represented and representatives, and thus to undermine nominal populism.
