Abstract: This article focuses on informality in EU politics. In this context, informality is understood as a phenomenon that complements or replaces formal structures, thus not necessary being unethical. The article sheds light on the phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective and, in addition to a comprehensive literature review on informality in general and specifically in the context of the European multi-level system, offers a theory-based analysis of possible effects that can arise from informal action. Complementary, conclusions about the EU context – based on empirical data from a survey conducted in 2021 and supplementary interviews – are drawn, with a particular focus on ethical implications.
