Abstract: Using the example of a copied township in Bloemfontein, South Africa, the article explains the phenomenon of theming. Theming is based on a difference between the everyday life of its visitors and the theme presented. This difference to everyday life as well as the seemingly lower “authenticity” does not distinguish themed places from other tourism destinations, but rather reveals both more obvious. Instead the author argues for a distinction between simplicity and complexity as a critical approach towards themed spaces.
