Abstract: German cooperative legislation does not precisely specify the principle of member-promotion. This problem also applies to newly founded cooperatives, for example cooperatives in the field of renewable energies. The purpose of this paper is therefore to extract potential membership benefits of such cooperatives via an empirical investigation of energy coops in Germany.
