Abstract: Economic efficiency as well as societal responsibility has been the primary objective of the Altonaer Spar- und Bauverein (altoba), a housing corporation located in Hamburg. Founded in 1892, the cooperative takes care of the members by organising social networks and aid in the case of emergencies. Moreover, the cooperative offers intensive member participation and develops joint projects with members. The article presents the authors interpretation of the member promotion principle and the role of social responsibility for the cooperative. They also give an insight into the history of the cooperative.
