Abstract: The digital transformation has far-reaching consequences for our lives and economies. New business models are becoming possible in the emerging data-driven economy. This transformation was made possible thanks to ubiquitous, interconnected digital devices. It has led to the rise of platform solutions and the economic dominance of digital technology companies. It offers opportunities, but questions of data protection and the informational selfdetermination of individuals must be convincingly resolved. How can companies make the best use of data in their business models while maintaining the trust of their customers? There are established forms: data partnerships, joint data platforms, digital marketplaces. Regarding the question of trust, the environment is becoming more demanding and the legal requirements higher. Cooperatives have particular advantages here. Cooperative approaches have historically played an important role in the management of shared resources. In the digital sphere, cooperative approaches to dealing with common digital resources (Digital Commons) are experiencing a renaissance. Cooperatives are particularly well positioned to strike a balance between individuals, use of resources and benefit to society. As soon as personal data is involved, user trust, participation, local anchoring, and transparent governance become important success factors. This is where cooperatives with their values can have an advantage. Therefore, cooperatives should maintain their participatory approach when developing digital business models.
