Abstract: German cooperative banks have been in a process of concentration for about a century, which has been driven by organic growth as well as by mergers. In this article, the motivation for mergers in general and for those of cooperative banks in particular, is presented and, based on previous research findings, the concentration in the cooperative sector is examined. It turns out that the concentration process is mainly driven by mergers, as shown by increased absolute and also relative concentration ratios.
