Abstract:
The platform economy has established itself as an irreversible development in the exchange of goods, services and information in the digital world. Initially advocated as a transparent instrument of direct contact with the elimination of intermediaries and thus transaction costs, its downsides such as onesided market power and market distortion are now becoming apparent. Due to their conception, platform cooperatives can represent an alternative. In order to show the academic reception of the possibilities and challenges as well as the differentiation of platform cooperatives from profit-maximizing platform companies, this paper is dedicated to a quantitative and qualitative analysis with regard to economic, social and legal differentiation criteria based on a systematic literature review. It compares profit-maximizing platforms with platform cooperatives and thus enables both a systematization of the understanding of platform cooperatives and an identification of current research gaps.
