Abstract:
Starting from the community idea of the Bauhaus builders and the community approach of housing cooperatives to building and living, this paper explores the relationships and interactions between the two subjects. The cooperative activities and experiences of the second Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer in the planning and construction of the Freidorf Muttenz are presented and followed up to a manifesto of the Bauhaus. With this background, the mutual effects of the Bauhaus and the cooperative movement are then explained in an exemplary manner. This is done on the one hand by means of the craftsmen's cooperative Gildenhall, which was supported by former “Bauhäusler“ and on the other hand by means of the housing cooperative Trachau-Nord eG, whose housing stock from the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century was built following the architectural attitude of the Bauhaus.
