Abstract: The article analyzes the history of origins of the private savings bank of Lerbach ("Privat-Sparkasse zu Lerbach") in respect to the implementation of cooperative principles. It examines the extent to which the private savings bank meets the requirements of the designation as "oldest cooperative credit organization". It traces the origins of the private savings bank in the local and regional context of the Upper Harz and situates the organizational form of the private savings bank in the historical development of modern cooperatives. Crucial to the emergence of the private savings bank of Lerbach is the burial fund ("Sterbekasse") that was founded on site in 1770 and the funerary society of Lerbach ("Begräbnis-Societät zu Lerbach") which was founded in 1783. The private savings bank was established in 1825. The article tracks its development until its transformation into a registered limited cooperative (eGmbH) in 1900.
