Abstract: This article examines the concentration of German savings banks from 2000 to 2020 using absolute and relative concentration measures and compares the results with the findings of an analogous analysis of German cooperative banks during the same investigation period. The main objective is to compare the development of both banking groups to work out existing differences and similarities and to find possible explanations for them. As a result, a research gap that has existed for more than two decades should be closed. It turns out that the concentration process of German savings banks (in contrast to the one affecting German cooperative banks) is driven by organic growth rather than mergers.
