Abstract:
This article presents the results of a survey among founders of cooperative pubs and restaurants. The study provides detailed insights into the motives for founding a cooperative and the suitability of the cooperative legal form for such businesses. In addition, problems, hurdles and supporting factors during the founding process are examined. The cooperative legal form proves to be a suitable instrument for a committed civil society to save traditional pubs and restaurants from closure on the one hand and to promote democracy and successful cooperation on the other. However, successful implementation requires certain prerequisites, including a well-coordinated team, integration into existing networks, specific characteristics of the founding members and a well-thought-out business concept.
