Abstract:
The success of the energy transition will largely depend on the long-term acceptance and support of the population. This paper examines the potential of energy cooperatives to help promote this acceptance and help shape the energy transition locally. The results show a variety of social added values of the cooperative model, which are often neglected in energy industry discussions. Nevertheless, energy cooperatives face several challenges, such as the pressure to professionalize, a lack of political support and still too little diversity within the membership. In addition, there is a need for municipalities to see themselves more as networks of actors from different sectors of society to shape social change together.
