Abstract: Considered to be a model of economic and social development worldwide a few decades ago, European edifice is currently very heterogeneous in this respect. European Union cohesion policy is based on financial solidarity and aims at reducing disparities between the levels of development of regions and member states. Also, promoting economic convergence in Europe is one of the main directions of this policy. However, the social and economic differences between countries remain substantial, in continuous growing after the expansions in 2004, 2007 and 2013. This paper aims to capture the new objectives of cohesion policy proposed by the European Commission, which will come into force in 2014, and their implications for our national economy.
