Multilateralismo versus Regionalismo:Impactos da Área de Livre Comércio das Américas sobre a Economia Brasileira

Abstract: This paper analyzes the potential impacts of the creation of the Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA) on the Brazilian economy vis a vis the option of unilateral liberalization towards the foreign commerce. Under a computable general equilibrium model, the sectorial and the general welfare level of the economy effects are analyzed and compared in order to evaluate the alternative gains between these two options of trade policy. The results suggest that a higher degree of trade openness is directly proportional to a higher welfare level and that the Brazilian option for trade policies that privilege the multilateralism, with the mean of unilateral liberalization of the Brazilian foreign commerce toward all partners indiscriminately, raises the gains of this welfare level of the economy.
