Abstract:
The Analysis puts the focus on links between EU-integration and globalization. The EU is active in the process of globalization, particularly through the EU single market and EU eastern enlargement. As regards major other impulses for economic globalization the focus is on technological progress - with strong emphasis on ICT - which facilitates the expansion of MNCs and e-commerce as well as traditional trade. EU surveys show that there is no majority for globalization. Globalization brings about a stronger competition of systems and the EU is facing challenges from the US and China. The EU single market and the Lisbon Agenda could contribute to improving international competitiveness. The EU should more often try to shape the agenda of the IMF, the WTO and the BIS. It also would be useful to enhance cooperation with other regional organizations (NAFTA/ MERCURSUSR). An important challenge is to export labor security standards from the north to the south. It is quite important that researches explainto the public the advantages and risk of economic globalization. "Intellectual" integration in Europe should be reinforced.
