Abstract: We use 2009 technical data to assess the economic efficiency of three second-generation biodiesel production technologies in the fight against greenhouse effects. To do so, we estimate the cost of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. The environmental impact is definitely positive, but production costs remain high. The cost per metric tonne of CO2 avoided exceeds ?100 for all the technologies studied. However, there is a strong uncertainty concerning many parameters. We have not assessed the potential cost-reduction gains from technical progress, which may be substantial.
