Reconversion des héritages olympiques et rénovation de l'espace urbain: le cas des stades olympiques

Romain Roult and Sylvain Lefebvre

Géographie, économie, société, 2010, vol. 12, issue 4, 367-391

Abstract: Summer olympics games are now an extremely complex and expensive urban project for host cities. Re-using and revitalizing the stadium and the other olympic buildings is a major challenge for cities and the main stadium is probably the most problematic element considering its cost and the complexity of its maintenance. Even with cautious planning, few of them are fully operational or financially viable. This article is assessing three case studies (Montreal, Barcelona and Sydney) which represent different patterns of post-olympic planning practices. Good planning practice doesn?t guarantee a successful regeneration of olympic sites. This article will also explore the need to integrate these olympic legacies to the local realities of the city.
