La densification des banlieues pavillonnaires à Paris et à Toronto au service de stratégies municipales de centralité différenciées

Anastasia Touati

Géographie, économie, société, 2015, vol. 17, issue 3, 339-363

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyze the mechanisms, objectives and challenges of densification policies in suburban areas in the light of urban political theories concerning post-suburbs. The central hypothesis of this paper is that there is a link between the strategy of centrality of a municipality and the privileged type of residential densification. The detailed analysis of the processes and policies studied in four suburban municipalities of the Paris-City region in France and of the Toronto-City region in Canada shows that the densification policies being put in place, whose forms characterize a given post-suburban evolution, are explicitly articulated to a search for a relative centrality in the urban region.
