Abstract: In 1992, the ASEAN members states decided upon the creation of a free trade area named AFTA and, at the same time, started to integrate the ten South East Asian countries, a process which continued all through the nineties. This article outlines the main characteristics and phases of the present South East Asian regionalization process. A detailed look at the example of Vietnam reveals the more specific problems these new members states experience, and what they expect from tighter economic relations with their neighbours.
