Abstract: The 1980s saw the emergence of a system of informal financial institutions. Over the last few years, the developing world in Africa, Asia, Latin America has witnessed the appearance and progression of a system of ?microfinance. This article examines the reasons that explain this evolution and the rise and importance of the development of microfinancial institutions. The paper analyses some of the problems created by these new institutions, such as the questions related to the type of regulatory framework to impose on them, to their possible relationship with established banks, and to their role within the existing financial systems.
