Abstract: Garip TURUNÇ An additional step is about to be taken in the long and ambiguous Turkish-European relationship which in principle should lead Turkey to become a member of the E.U. in the medium term. This article puts in perspective this process. In the first part, we trace the history of Turko-European relations, presenting the terms of the Founding Agreement of the Assotiation of 1963, then those of the Customs Union of 1995 and the acceleration of the process of enlargement decided in December 1999 by the European Council at Helsinki and finally the evolution during these last five years which constitute a new era in Turko-European relations. In the second part we propose a framework permitting us to explicit the issues from the Turkish as well as the European points of view.
