Abstract: For A. Sen and J. Rawls, education contributes to create and to increase, in individuals, respect for themselves, to strengthen their autonomy and to guarantee social cohesion. A. Sen underlines that education is a necessary condition of economic development. In the opinion of J. Rawls and A. Sen, it is advisable to protect freedom of access to education as well as equality of opportunity.
