Abstract:
In the context of the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, tourism towards distant destination, including French overseas territories, appears quite questionable. This paper assesses the emissions, identifies the action variables to reduce them and combines these within scenarios to 2025 for a set of destinations : Guadeloupe, Reunion island, French Polynesia, and New Caledonia. This carbon constraint could be introduced in the future by development agencies as a criterion, together with biodiversity and poverty alleviation, contributing to the decision to support tourism development or not.
