Abstract: In the Algerian steppe, in fifty years, population, acreage and numbers of sheeps and goats have tripled, imports of feed grains have increased dramatically ; the double transhumance, in the Sahara in summer and in the Tell in winter, has decreased and the stepic ranges, overcrowded and overgrazed, have been highly degraded. Restoring the ranges, developing irrigation and local fodder resource, regulating prices and supplies of cereals is now more than ever possible and necessary to relaunch sustainable breeding in the steppe.
