Abstract:
The African continent can be characterised by its demographic and economic heterogeneity, which is reflected in the variety of social protection systems for older persons. Health and ageing related risks are inequally hedged, whether social protection is based on contributory and/or non-contributory schemes. In the context of a progressive expansion of their coverage, the rapid growth of the aged population needs to be integrated into the making of social policies.
