Abstract: Following a decade of wars during the 1990s, and on the orders of international institutions, the Republic of the Congo established a new mining code. The sector was radically redesigned, with large global conglomerates replacing smaller foreign mining companies, raising hopes of rapid economic impacts for the country. Although an increasingly frequent enforcement of local laws might point to a potential development of the territories, the absence of reconstruction coupled with the lack of infrastructure and of professional training adapted to the mining sector seriously hinder mining activity in the Republic of the Congo, leading to disappointments that are just as great as the expectations.
