Abstract:
Using data from a survey conducted in Douala and Yaoundé, this study analyzes the determinants of pipe-borne water consumption by urban households in Cameroon. The results show that education, income, and connection costs, among other things, determine a household?s connection status. They also suggest a low responsiveness of water demand to price changes. The value of the direct price elasticity is found to be -0.326 with the instrumental variables approach and -0.550 with the ordinary least squares approach. Other significant determinants of water consumption are income, household size, number of rooms in the household, and the supply of water to unpiped neighboring households.
